Dr. Deborah Sweeney, Tel Aviv
Brothers and Brotherhood at Deir el-Medîna

Abstract der Referentin

Egyptian society was strongly orientated towards inheritance from father to son. Relation-ships between brothers are far less well-attested and tend to be elusive to trace. However, the well-documented village of Deir el-Medîna, home to the expert craftsmen who built and decorated the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, offers a rich store of administrative and family documentation about the people who lived here. This lecture will attempt to trace the lived relationships between brothers in that community. Since the term ‘brother’ in Ancient Egyptian also referred to uncles, cousins, nephews and in-laws, I will also investigate how brotherhood in those relationships might have differed from brotherhood between children of the same parents.
