Osiris: the myth and his local cults

Abstract der Referentin

Within Egyptian culture, Osiris embodied different concepts and expectations (human rebirth, legitimate kingship, succession of generations, regeneration of nature, lunar cycles ...). His mythological cycle was composed of different episodes: legitimate reign, indiscriminate murder by his brother, mummification, rebirth, triumph over his enemies in a law-court, royal leadership of the beyond or the transfer of royal power to his son. His cult reached a wide projection in the territory and in the course of this expansion his attributes and mythical cycle were enriched through the absorption of local traditions, religious beliefs and practices, giving rise to different local Osirian forms. In this lecture the main features of the god and his local manifestation in the Heracleopolitan province (20th Upper Egyptian nome) will be examined.
